In her exhibition “One Follows Another,” artist Elise Deringer explores transitions –from interior to exterior, from heavy to light, from one state to another, using silk, sand, stones, concrete, and spices. Looking at her work, the viewer may not know that these sculptures reference landscapes, and in particular, shorelines. Yet one can see that the soft, organic, and transparent forms of varied multiples, can easily change, or be changed by the environment, just as a landscape changes when affected by natural forces.

"I became really interested in the potential for silk – beautiful and precious, yet incredibly strong and resilient," she says. "Sand, stones, and concrete filter through, are contained within, or permeate a textile boundary and serve as foils to transparent silk net and organza used throughout my work," says Deringer. "Essentially, I am trying to understand the conflicting desire to simultaneously hold onto and let go of something, someone, a place, an idea."

The Night Gallery is located at the Tempe Marketplace, 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway, Tempe, AZ. The gallery is on the west end and south side of “The District” between Barnes & Noble bookstore and Aeropostale.
