Critically acclaimed digital filmmaker Jon Reiss discusses "Thinking Outside the Box Office" when he visits the ASU Tempe campus Feb. 21 as the next p.a.v.e speaker. Named one of the 10 digital directors to watch by Daily Variety, Reiss is director of the documentary feature Bomb It, which explored the world of graffiti art. His experiences with marketing his film became the inspiration for his book, Think Outside the Box Office: The Ultimate Guide to Film Distribution in the Digital Era, a step-by-step guide for filmmakers to distribute and market their own work. He is also co-author of Selling Your Film Without Selling Your Soul with The Film Collaborative and Sheri Chandler. Spring 2012 will see the DVD release of Bomb It 2, in which Reiss extends his exploration of graffiti art to the Middle East, South East Asia, and Australia.

Previous feature films include Better Living Through Circuitry, a glimpse into the rave culture, and Cleopatra’s Second Husband, a psychological drama. Reiss has also directed videos for Nine Inch Nails, The Black Crowes, Danzig, Slayer, and the Kottonmouth Kings. Reiss’ “Happiness in Slavery” video for Nine Inch Nails won awards at the Chicago and San Francisco film festivals and was voted Top Ten by the Village Voice Critics Poll for Best Music Video.

The talk is part of the p.a.v.e. spring speakers series. P.a.v.e. in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts offers public programming and curricula and supports student learning, creativity and innovation through its arts venture incubator, one of only four in the nation. This event is free and open to the public.

Jon Reiss will recount experiences with marketing feature films as next p.a.v.e. speaker
