Securing a free state: The Second Amendment Project explores the dance between individual and collective rights as they relate to the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. In this project, artist Jennifer Nelson focused on the personal motivations and dignity of citizens on both sides of the debate by exploring how people find security, individually and collectively. These questions were considered from the point of view of those who feel the need to arm themselves in order to feel secure and free, as well as from the perspective of those who must regain a sense of security and freedom after having their security violated. Visitors participated in the project throughout the artist’s residency through open gallery events, a panel discussion and field trips to a prosthetics design facility, sniper training school and a mental rehabilitation center. The events and activities that took place during the artist residency informed a number of video and sculptural installations made during the artist's visit.

This exhibition, which continues through December,  is supported by a grant from The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
