Adriene Jenik's "Data Humanization Project"

“The Sky is Falling” is part of Adriene Jenik’s ongoing “Data Humanization Project,” which works to re-assert the connection of data – the unending stream of numbers that increasingly shape our lives – to human scale and context. Through a simple gesture, the performance physically “translates” a single datapoint so that it can be more fully comprehended by the artist and by her audiences.

Jenik is an artist, educator and arts leader who resides in the Phoenix metro area. Jenik's artistic projects straddle and trouble the borders between art and popular culture and have been written about in The New York Times, published in The Drama Review, and recognized by the Rockefeller Foundation. Her computer and media art spans three decades, including pioneering work in interactive cinema and live telematic performance. Jenik is currently developing “data humanization” performances while she serves as director of the ASU School of Art.

This piece is presented in conjunction with "Energy Charge: Connecting to Ana Mendieta," an exhibition on view at the ASU Art Museum Sept. 24–Dec. 31.
