Africanfuturism and Worldbuilding in Science Fiction

African American woman with glowing markings around her eye.

A conversation with science fiction writer Nnedi Okorafor on building fictional worlds and better futures.

Award-winning writer Nnedi Okorafor joins Matt Bell's "Writing Science Fiction" class for a conversation about her acclaimed novel "Lagoon," as well as issues of worldbuilding in science fiction and fantasy, Africanfuturism and other genres.

Together they will discuss how imagining fictional worlds might make new possibilities reachable in our own futures.

Okorafor's works include "Who Fears Death" (in development at HBO into a TV series), the "Binti" novella trilogy (optioned and in development with Media Res) and many other novels, stories and comics. She is the winner of Hugo, Nebula, World Fantasy, Locus and Lodestar Awards, and her debut novel "Zahrah the Windseeker" won the prestigious Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature.
