Ask a Diplomat in Residence

Ken Chavez, diplomat in residence for the Southwest and foreign service officer, will discuss student internship and graduate fellowship programs with the U.S. Department of State on Thursday, Nov. 29 from noon to 1 p.m..

For students with at least 60 hours of credit, internships are available in Washington, D.C. and at U.S. embassies and consulates around the world. For those considering graduate school in a subject relevant to diplomacy, the Department of State has two graduate fellowship programs that provide funding towards a two-year master’s degree, include two paid internships and link to a job as a foreign service officer upon completion.

A native of the Southwest, Chavez joined the Foreign Service in 2004 and was most recently the deputy consul general at the U.S. Embassy in Managua, Nicaragua. Chavez has previously served in Washington, D.C.; Guadalajara, Mexico; and Beijing, China.
