ASU Humanities Faculty Writing Studio

The IHR invites you to a 6-week writing studio for ASU Humanities faculty, facilitated by Christopher Jones.

Want to jump start your current writing project? Looking for dedicated writing time in a supportive and collegial environment? Interested in picking up new habits to make your writing more productive and less daunting? Join a special 6-week writing studio for ASU Humanities faculty members.

Starting Friday, Sept. 13, we will gather on Friday mornings to work on our individual writing projects. Most of our time (more than 80%) will be spent writing, with short intervals to discuss strategies for increasing productivity. We’ll talk about setting ourselves up for success, avoiding negative self-talk, and practicing habits that make it easier to keep writing on a regular basis.

Unlike many other writing workshops, we will not be focusing on literary style or genre; nor will we be exchanging or discussing each other’s texts. Instead, our focus will be on setting aside dedicated time for writing and brief exercises to help increase productivity. The intended outcomes for this workshop are completed pieces of writing, such as articles and book chapters, and faculty members who feel more empowered as writers.

Eligibility

ASU Humanities faculty members (all FTE, including instructors, lecturers, clinical and tenure-track faculty are welcome to join).

Capacity

Priority will be given to the first 16 registrants.

When

This workshop is a series of six sessions, every Friday, 9 a.m.–noon, Sept. 13–Oct. 18

Expectation for attendance

Because space is limited and exercises will build over time, participants are expected to attend all six sessions. Please let the facilitator know in advance if you need to miss a session.

Facilitator

Christopher Jones (SHPRS; History) will facilitate the workshops drawing on insights from his work with Rich Furman, a highly experienced writing coach. As someone who has had both struggles and occasional successes with academic writing, he is excited to work with faculty to support their efforts.

Location and parking

This event will be hosted in Ross-Blakley Hall at ASU's Tempe campus. The closest parking options are the visitor parking in Lot 44 and the Rural Road parking structure.
