ASU Peer Program for Socialization

ASU Peer Program for Socialization (APPS) is an activity-based program where preteens and teens with social communication difficulties learn and practice successful social communication and interaction with peers.

Activity-based intervention engages preteens and teens and provides a context to practice social skills learned in intervention. Activities are structured around a variety of themes such as arts/crafts, games, cooking, music, science experiments, drama and more.

What can I expect?

Graduate clinicians, guided by ASHA-certified Speech-Language Pathologists, will implement therapy. Skills targeted are related to making and keeping friends.

Some examples include:

• Joining in activities with peers
• Engaging in successful conversations
• Using and understanding body language and tone of voice
• Increasing range of conversational topics and interests
• Handling disagreements and compromising
• Explaining ideas and cooperative verbal problem solving
• Considering the perspective of others in conversations
• Building self-esteem
• Recognizing personal talents and strengths

Who can attend?

Preteens and teens ages 10–16 who have goals diagnosed or undiagnosed. The group is formed by matching members based on age and speech-language skills and needs.
