ASU World Percussion Ensemble

April 22, 7:30 p.m.

Benjamin Yats directs the Arizona State University World Percussion Ensemble in a concert of rhythms drawn from the drumming cultures of Africa, the Middle East, India, the Caribbean and South America.

As part of the Ethnomusicology program, the World Percussion Ensemble is taught through oral tradition although some written materials are made available from time to time. Students are encouraged to use their memory in retaining the rhythms, songs and folklore that is presented. Cultural information on the origins of the material accompanies the music being played, along with information on its historical development. By learning in the traditional way, students gain personal insights into the cultures and ethnic groups covered.

In the case of inclement weather, this concert will move to Katzin Concert Hall in the Music Building.
