This Bitter Earth: A Film Screening and Community Discussion of 'Killer of Sheep'

Filmmaker Charles Burnett

Directed, produced, and filmed by Charles Burnett in 1972 in Watts, Calif., “Killer of Sheep” was made for less than $10,000 when he was a young film student at UCLA.

Submitted as part of his MFA, Burnett said he, “also intended to make the film a history of African-American music and filled it with music from a variety of genres and different eras.” It is an intimate portrait of Black life in America devoid of common tropes and stereotypes that endure today.

This event, part of the Humanities Lecture Series in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts, will be moderated by Michael Pfister, English instructor in the College of Integrative Sciences and Arts, who will be joined by a panel of Phoenix-based artists, musicians, and community advocates.
