Come explore and learn about the lives of prehistoric Native Americans and Southwest archaeology. Experience our quarter-mile trail for a chance to view the petroglyphs, observe desert plants and animals in their native habitat, and learn about the history and culture of Indigenous people. The Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve invites visitors to immerse themselves into the surroundings and contemplate how their lives connect to those of the past.

Saturday’s activities include:

  • 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Pima basket-making with August Wood. Learn about traditional basket techniques from a member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
  • 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Study of Ancient Lifeways and Technology (SALT) demonstrations. Learn skills like starting fire with a stick, making stone tools, rope-making and more! Attendance is free. Participation is free to SALT members; non-SALT members pay a nominal cash fee for supplies.
