Aaron White: Live Performance at Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve

Performance times are: 11 to 11:45 a.m. and 1 to 1:45 p.m. and included with admission fee.

Grammy nominated musician Aaron White will be performing Saturday, March 23 at the Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve.

White and his group, Burning Sky, were nominated for Best Native American Recording at the Grammy Awards in 2003, and won Group of the Year from the Native American Music Awards in 2003.

Presentation on American Indian Foods — Ramona Farms
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ramona Farms, located on the Gila River Indian reservation, specializes in growing the Bavi (tepary bean) and will be at the preserve talking about their experience bringing back the tepary beans to the community. The presentation will include their family history of farming, traditional products grown at their farm today, and recipes and techniques on how to cook healthy, wholesome dishes.

Book Signing/Reading – "Codetalker Stories" by Laura Tohe, ASU professor emerita

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Celebrated author, Laura Tohe, will be reading from her book and signing copies of "Codetalker Stories." Tohe was named poet laureate of the Navajo Nation for 2015–2017, and has written four books, published hundreds of poems and has had several translations of her work — including into dance and music. In 2008, Tohe wrote the commissioned libretto for “Enemy Slayer: A Navajo Oratorio” for the Phoenix Symphony.

The museum store will have books available to purchase.

Traditional Basket-weaving Demonstration – August Wood

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Pima artist August Wood, from the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Reservation, will be at the preserve for an informational discussion and demonstration about Pima baskets. Experience the traditional techniques used to weave natural desert materials into baskets of all shapes, sizes and designs.
