Creating Peace from Conflict

Creating Peace from Conflict

The "America in Times of Conflict" series presents its final program, "Creating Peace from Conflict," from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 22, at the Chandler Center for the Arts, 250 N. Arizona Ave. This free two-hour program culminates the series with theatrical and musical performances, veterans’ stories, and audience participation that explore the ways individuals who have experienced war have created inner peace.

“After spending the last six months diving into the personal stories of people who have been affected by our country’s time in conflicts, we wanted to end it with the peace and positive impact on the community that comes from that turmoil,” said Mary Sagar, administrative librarian. “Many of the performers at this program are veterans who have graduated from ASU or are currently attending the university,” Sagar added.

In addition to the performances, images from photographer Devin Mitchell’s Veterans Vision Project will be on display. The photo documentary features current and former military service members with the intention of capturing the human side of service and transition to civilian life.

"America in Times of Conflict" is a collaborative series presented by Chandler Public Library, Chandler Museum and Chandler Center for the Arts. It started on Nov. 5, 2016, with Courageous Stories of Arizona Military Aviators. Through panel discussions, lectures, movies and performances, attendees of the series explored World War II, Japanese American internment, Korean War, Vietnam, the Morenci Nine, Ira Hayes and women in the military.

This final program is the result of a partnership with ASU Office for Veteran and Military Academic Engagement; ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts – Music Therapy Program; ASU School Film, Dance and Theatre; ASU School of International Letters and Cultures (Classics); and Veterans for Peace.
