Design + Wellness: Creating Innovative Healthcare

It’s difficult to imagine a day without the influence of design and technology. At home, in the workplace and throughout our communities, we are confounded or embraced by the presence of products and spaces, the tools of everyday living.

In this lecture, jointly presented by The Design School in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and the Center for Innovation in Healthy and Resilient Aging, designer and gerontologist Patricia Moore will review the role of design and technology in our daily lives, how we came to this point, where we are today and what the future might and should deliver for meeting the universal goal of the highest quality of life, for all.

About Patricia Moore

Recipient of the prestigious National Design Award, as “Design Mind” in 2019, and this year’s honoree for The Changemaker Award, presented by The Center for Health Design, Moore has led the effort for global equity with inclusive solutions for the lifespan.

Her five decades career as one of the founders of the philosophy of Universal Design, includes influence in Communication Design, Design Research, Environmental Design, Package Design, Product Design, Service Design, Transportation Design, UX Design, Market Analysis and Product Positioning. Moore has designed more than 300 Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Environments for healthcare facilities throughout North America, Europe and Japan.

In 1997, Moore received the Professional Recognition Award by the Arizona Design Institute for fostering Excellence in Design Education and has lectured throughout the Americas, Australia, China, Europe, Korea, Japan, New Zealand and Russia. In 2000, Moore was honored by ASU’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design with the Distinguished Achievement Award.

ID Magazine selected Moore as one of The 40 Most Socially Conscious Designers in the world. In 2000, a consortium of news editors named her as one of the 100 Most Important Women in America. In 2012 she was inducted into The Rochester Institute of Technology’s “INNOVATORS Hall of Fame” and named a Doctor of Fine Arts by Syracuse University for serving as a “guiding force for a more humane and livable world, blazing a path for inclusiveness, as a true leader in the movement of Universal Design.” ABC World News featured Moore as one of 50 Americans Defining the New Millennium. Hasselt University in Belgium awarded Moore a PhD in May 2019 for her efforts towards “Inclusion and Excellence”.
