Using the Cloud to Power Virtual Reality and Gaming on Mobile Devices // Eduardo Cuervo

Abstract: Creating an immersive VR experience requires high framerate, low-latency and high fidelity visuals. Unfortunately, such requirements are prohibitive for battery-mobile devices, restricting high-fidelity VR experiences to tethered environments. A natural solution to this problem would be to leverage a resource rich system in the cloud, but the high bandwidth requirements and latency sensitivity of VR workloads apparently render this option unfeasible. In this talk, I will describe a couple of systems I have built to overcome the limitations of mobile VR through cloud infrastructure while reducing the bandwidth requirements and the user perceived latency.

Bio: Eduardo Cuervo is a computer scientist with vast experience in game streaming, computational offload and virtual reality. He is currently a software engineer in the AR/VR division of Facebook where he works on enabling the future of work on the Oculus headsets. Before Facebook, he was a researcher at Microsoft where he led the Cloud and Edge Mixed Reality initiative focusing on enabling untethered immersive mixed reality experiences . He holds doctoral and masters degrees in computer science from Duke University, and a bachelor's degree also in computer science from Tecnologico de Monterrey in Mexico City.
