Eaun Macdonald: 'A Bigger Plan'

Euan Macdonald

"A Bigger Plan: Side B and Side A" at ASU Art Museum is a two-part exhibition by visual artist Euan Macdonald.

The second part of the exhibition, "Side A," features an installation of works including video, sculpture, prints and paintings. Central to the exhibition is "TRIP" (2018), an immersive two-channel video installation of light, sound and space — a cumulative layering of graphic imagery collected from the end pages of 18th, 19th and early 20th century books in the collection of the main ASU Library. During his stay at the ASU Artist Residency, Macdonald worked closely with ASU Art Museum curator Julio Cesar Morales and ASU Librarian and Scholar Ralph Gabbard collecting and scanning the end pages of numerous old volumes from the library collection. Many books from the earlier eras of mass printing were bound with vibrantly colored end pages, hand produced with pigments floated in oil and water as well as more minimal, monochromatic designs. The animated videos will be displayed in the stacks and other unexpected spaces within the Design and the Arts Library.

Euan Macdonald was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is based in Los Angeles and Oregon. He exhibits internationally, recently at Objectif Exhibitions, Antwerp; The Hayward Gallery, London; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco; Arrow factory, Beijing; Museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; CRAC Centre Alsace, France; and The Getty Museum, Los Angeles. Macdonald’s work is in museum collections such as National Gallery of Canada; The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; The Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; MAXXI, Rome; Musée d'art Contemporain de Montréal; The New Museum, New York; and Vancouver Art Gallery.
