Exhibit: LGBT History in Arizona, 1969-2014

LGBT History

Visit ASU Libraries current exhibit, "LGBT History in Arizona, 1969-2014," which celebrates Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) history in Arizona and showcases archival material from the Bj Bud Memorial Archives which contains LGBT organization records, subject files, photographs, periodicals and artifacts. The collection, now located within the Arizona Collection at Arizona State University Libraries, was assembled by local LGBT activists and the Valley of the Sun Gay and Lesbian Center. The Community Center, established in 1993, provided a safe space for the LGBT community in Phoenix. The center sponsored and provided health services, support groups, and educational programs. They also created a small library and archive that was accessible to anyone who wanted to learn more about the LGBT community and experiences. On Feb. 14, 1996, a well-known and loved lesbian activist named Harlene “Bj” Bud passed away and the Community Center honored her life by naming the collection after her.

About the Bj Bud Memorial Archives, in the Arizona Collection

This collection contains organization records, subject files, photographs, periodicals and artifacts that document LGBT history in Arizona. In addition, there is a small collection of material from various locations in the United States, Canada and England. LGBT history is under-documented in Arizona archives and libraries. As a result, Phoenix Pride, Marshall Shore (Hip Historian) and ASU Libraries formed the Arizona LGBT History Project, an initiative to preserve archival material.

If you are unable to visit the exhibit, a version of this exhibit can be found online.
