The Filibuster and Policymaking: Essential Knowledge for Social Workers

Sarah Binder

Many social workers have been active in efforts to pass voting rights legislation and the Building Back Better infrastructure package. The Senate filibuster has taken center stage in these recent efforts, with some seeing the filibuster as a key obstacle to passing legislation. Many social workers are now calling for filibuster reform, with others wondering about its history or purpose.

ASU School of Social Work is hosting a free, virtual seminar introducing social workers, students and other community members to the details of the filibuster, including a brief overview of the history of the filibuster and its role in governance, and the pros and cons of potential filibuster reforms.

Brookings Senior Fellow and Professor of Political Science at George Washington University,

Dr. Sarah Binder, a national expert on the United States Senate, will provide a nuts-and-bolts overview of the filibuster and filibuster reform proposals and answer your questions.
