Globalization and Culture: National Heritage, Memory and Identity with Vaira Vike-Freiberga

Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, Center for Advanced Studies in Global Education and Barrett, The Honors College are honored to host Vaira Vike-Freiberga as she presents a lecture discussing her scholarship on Latvian national heritage and folklore and its role in identity-resilience. Vike-Freiberga is a scholar in residence under the Distinguished Global Leader Series at Barrett, The Honors College.

About the speaker:
Vaira Vike-Freiberga is president of the World Leadership Alliance/Club de Madrid and former president of the Republic of Latvia (1999–2007). She was the first female president and was instrumental in achieving membership in the EU and NATO for her country. She was also a special envoy on UN reform.

Vike-Freiberga is a member, board member or patron of 30 international organizations including the World Leadership Alliance, the board of trustees of the Nizami Ganjavi International Centre and the Global Leadership Foundation, as well as five academies. She is also an honorary fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford University,and has published extensively.

Born in Riga, Vike-Freiberga started her education in refugee camps in Germany, then lived in Morocco and Canada, obtaining a doctoral degree at McGill University. After a distinguished career as professor of psychology and international scholar at the University of Montreal, she returned to her native country in 1998 to head the Latvian Institute. Less than a year later, she was elected president by the Latvian Parliament and re-elected in 2003.
