Hanna Makkonen: Materia Prima

Hanna Makkonen: Materia Prima

“Materia Prima” is an MFA thesis exhibition by Hanna Makkonen. Through the writings of authors such as Haraway, the perception of individualism is fading while there is growing attention to the deeply ingrained symbiosis between species, and the collective nature of living organisms. With a speculative future narrative, these sculptural works address themes of individuality, transformation, free will and the unseen influences on our behavior. Utilizing an array of sculptural techniques and materials, they reference neo-classical traditional figurative sculpture and investigate the possibilities of digital rendering. The result is an aesthetic involving a surreal mixture of organic matter, figurative elements and digitally sculpted forms.

Gallery occupancy is limited to allow for social distancing. Face coverings are required in all campus buildings and outdoor spaces.
