Indigenous Poetry Workshop with Amber McCrary

Amber McCrary

Please join the ASU Library Labriola Center for an online Indigenous poetry workshop with Amber McCrary, Diné poet, zinester and feminist.

We will examine poetry from contemporary Indigenous poets through video clips and interviews, and learn about the creative process through the lens of an Indigenous poet. We will discuss poems and the creative process of poets like Layli Longsoldier, Ofelia Zepeda and Billy-Ray Belcourt, just to name a few. In addition to discussion and examination of Native poets, we will conduct two writing exercises in which you will begin to create two poems by the end of the workshop.

Originally from Shonto, AZ, and raised in Flagstaff, AZ, Amber McCrary is Red House Clan born for Mexican people. She earned her BA from Arizona State University in political science with a minor in American Indian studies, and received her MFA in creative writing with an emphasis in poetry at Mills College in Oakland, CA. She recently released a chapbook of poetry titled, "Electric Deserts!"(Tolsun Books). She currently resides in Mesa, AZ.
