Learning How to Live in the Present

Learning How to Live in the Present

The more fully we can contact our here and now experience, the more effectively we can act, and the more fulfilling life becomes. Noticing what is happening here and now, discriminating between seeing and thinking, and paying attention flexibly to both the inner world and outer world is at the very core of mindfully contacting the present moment.

This presentation will provide information and tools that can enhance conscious awareness of our experiences in the present moment to perceive what is happening accurately and gather information about whether to change or be persistent in behavior according to our life values.

Byron Garcia is a clinical psychology student at ASU whose research focuses on understanding risk and protective factors for problematic behavior among ethnic minority youth and families. He uses an integrative approach to inform his clinical orientation by drawing theories from the acceptance and commitment therapy, also referred to as ACT, and cognitive-behavioral therapy also referred to as CBT. These treatments emphasize skills that include mindfulness, identification of functional or dysfunctional thinking patterns and values-based work.
