Donald Fortescue: Professor of art and design; California College of the Arts, San Francisco
Donald Fortescue spent a summer at the South Pole working with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory — a giant array of photon detectors buried miles under the polar ice. Fortescue approaches art making and astrophysics as two congruent practices of so-called fieldwork, requiring that logistical challenges be overcome, sensitive and largely untested instruments be deployed and tested, and resulting data be collected.
In the talk, Fortescue will share his Antarctica experiences, describe the sculptural instruments he deployed there, and elaborate on the imagery, video and sound works he is developing for exhibition. Fortesque’s visit is part of the Windgate Contemporary Craft Initiative at the ASU Art Museum and is supported by the Windgate Charitable Foundation.
Refreshments will be served.
