"Noted Gesture" Exhibition

Step Gallery Exhibition Christopher Luper

Step Gallery is pleased to present "Noted Gesture," an MFA thesis exhibition in sculpture by Chris Luper.

A “Noted Gesture” is a contemplative study on internal reflection with focus on the importance of mindset and attunement to self, others, and environment. These works address how our internal voice has a tremendous effect on how we interact to the world around us. The concept explores meditative practices such as “noting” — a technique utilized when quieting the mind of internal chatter to maintain focus on breath. Thoughts that arise are noted and moved aside. The mind has a path of least resistance in thought processing and it is important to note said lines of thought and be able to refocus on breath.
"Noted Gesture" unpacks an otherwise cumbersome painterly gestural form into smaller and more defined moments in time. By reflecting on these moments, we begin to see patterns, symmetries, and differences within the greater motion. Gesture emanates from the motion of the body and emotion of the subconscious mind; together these elements present the optimal catalyst to approach an abstract concept such as conscious thought in its overarching influence.
