Opening reception: "Monstalgia" art exhibit

Monstalgia exhibit

In conjunction with the Institute for Humanities Research 2015-2016 Fellows theme, "Monsters and Monstrosity," as well as in preparation for the 200th anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, "Monstalgia" explores incarnations of monsters, robots, aliens, and other fantastical creatures in contemporary art through the lenses of both nostalgia — a longing for a home that no longer exists — and solstalgia — a longing for life before environmental change and all its ramifications.

From comic books, children's movies and television programs to iconic stories like Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are" and R.L. Stine's "Goosebumps" series, the monstrous and otherworldly have been long entwined with notions of youthful imagination. However, this relationship has often been problematized both in art and scholarship. This exhibition aims to unpack the "problem" of the monstrous both in art and in life, and explore how it is affected by memory and remembrance.
