'Our Own Muse: The Female Gaze' Exhibition

Our Own Muse

Throughout art history, women have traditionally been depicted through the male gaze as an archetype of beauty and desire.

'Our Own Muse: The Female Gaze' is comprised of five female artists collectively asserting “we are proud to paint ourselves, not as passive muses for others, but active agents in our own creation.”

This exhibition showcases a series of paintings from young women whose works are wrapped in their own truths about identity, feminism, sexuality and diversity by telling their own stories. The works are beautifully confident and present without reservation as they put forth their voices without apology or need for justification. It recalls a recent exhibition at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (TX) titled 'Women Painting Women,' that recognizes female perspectives that have been underrepresented throughout history, making way for female artists to share the stage with their male counterparts in defining the image of woman and how it has evolved.

In viewing the works of 'Our Own Muse: The Female Gaze,' it is clear that these young female artists are creating works that are more than just beautiful self-expressions of identity and culture — they are works that will shape and ultimately reflect our world by creating a portfolio of new archetypes.
