Poetry in America: Welcome to the West!

An event to celebrate Poetry in America's new home in Arizona

Members of the community are invited to the first-ever Poetry in America Welcome to the West live experience hosted by Arizona PBS in downtown Phoenix on April 13, 2022 at 2 p.m. Poetry in America, the popular PBS show, is now co-headquartered at the ASU Center for Public Humanities. The event will showcase most recent season of Poetry in America. Poetry in America’s mission is to bring poetry into living rooms and classrooms around the world. Human language connects us across time and space.

Poetry in America: Welcome to the West event featured guests:

Lindy Elkins-Tanton is a Foundation and Regents Professor in the School of Earth and Space Exploration. She is also the vice president of the ASU Interplanetary Initiative, and in 2017 she was selected to be the principal investigator of the Psyche mission, the 14th mission in NASA’s Discovery program.

Alberto Ríos is Arizona’s inaugural poet laureate and a recent chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. Ríos is also the host of the Arizona PBS programs "Art in the 48" and Books & Co. Ríos has taught at Arizona State University since 1982 in various roles including University Professor of Letters, Regents Professor, Virginia G. Piper Chair in Creative Writing, and the Katharine C. Turner Chair in English. In 2017, he was named director of the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing.

Event will take place in the First Amendment Forum (2nd Floor) of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications. A livestream of the event will also be available on the Arizona PBS YouTube channel.

Parking is available on ASU's Downtown Phoenix campus for a fee. You can see garage and lot options for campus here. There are also lots and garages not affiliated with ASU around the downtown campus as well.
