“Publish or Perish”: Supply, Demand and Editorial Process in Shakespeare Studies

As everyone knows, getting an article accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal is a difficult process; it is also an essential part of academic success, especially for early-career scholars. What is perhaps less obvious is how essential publishing high-quality, peer-reviewed essays is to the identity and existence of scholarly journals and how difficult it is to do. In this talk I will try to describe the editorial process, from initial submission through rejection or publication, at Shakespeare Quarterly, and to put this process in the context of Shakespeare-studies journals more generally. My goal will be to demonstrate some ways in which an awareness of the supply and demand problems facing journal editors can benefit early-career scholars preparing manuscripts for publication.

About Jeremy Lopez

Jeremy Lopez is Professor of English at the University of Toronto and, since 2018, the Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly. From 2003-2013 he was the Theater Reviews Editor for Shakespeare Bulletin. He is the author of numerous books and essays on the drama of Shakespeare and his contemporaries including, most recently, The Arden Introduction to Reading Shakespeare: Close Reading and Analysis. He is the general editor of the forthcoming Routledge Anthology of Early Modern Drama and is currently at work on projects on Othello, the plays of John Fletcher, and problems of “inconsistency” in early modern plays.
