Screening of 'People's Republic of Desire'

Screening of 'People's Republic of Desire'

Join Future Tense for the Washington, D.C., screening of "People’s Republic of Desire," the winner of the 2018 SXSW Grand Jury Award for documentary feature, directed by Future Tense Fellow Hao Wu. "People’s Republic of Desire" is a masterful exploration of the paradox of connected loneliness in China’s thriving live-streaming realm, where online celebrities and members of China’s young and lonely diaosi (“loser”) generation interact in search of riches, validation and elusive happiness.

Hao Wu is an award-winning documentarian and filmmaker, having previously worked for the tech industry in both Silicon Valley and China. He also directed the critically acclaimed "The Road to Fame." Wu will be joined in conversation by Christina Larson, a former New America National Fellow, who is a global science and environment correspondent for the Associated Press with many years’ experience reporting from China.

This Future Tense film screening will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Washington, D.C.'s Landmark E Street Cinema at 555 11th St. NW. You may RSVP for yourself and up to one guest. Seating is limited.

Future Tense is a partnership of SlateNew America and Arizona State University.
