In the Shadow of Giants: The Other Italians Exhibit

A piece of opera sheet music with music notes and lyrics in Italian

Discover "In the Shadow of Giants: The Other Italians," a new exhibit at the ASU Music Library.

The end of the 19th century into the beginning of the 20th century saw the rise of verismo opera. While the movement spread throughout many countries, it is most commonly associated with the Italian composers Giacomo Puccini, Pietro Mascagni, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Umberto Giordano, and Francesco Cilea. Unfortunately, the popularity of these "giants" of the genre has overshadowed the great works of many other Italian composers whose remarkable operatic contributions have been neglected or forgotten.

This exhibit features first-edition opera scores by 11 of these lesser-known Italian composers including works by Domenico Monleone, Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Alberto Franchetti, Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli, Antonio Smareglia and Ildebrando Pizzetti.

The exhibit will be featured in the ASU Music Library from Aug. 18 through Dec. 16, 2022. Check library hours and plan your visit

All scores are from the private collection of Dr. Robert Mills.
