skinnyblk

As the topics of masculinity, gender and sexuality become more and more accessible in mainstream American culture, rapper, poet and educator Sean Avery debuts their two-part hip-hop project, "skinnyblk." Simultaneously an album and play, "skinnyblk" is a multimedia journey through Avery’s life that celebrates being both black and gender non-binary by confronting the stigmas of toxic masculinity and race through interdisciplinary performance art. Directed and produced by Dr. Tamika Sanders, music by rapper and beatmaker Mic Maven and performed with a rotating ensemble of performance artists, "skinnyblk" uses anime, superheroes, dance, rap and spoken word to challenge the lines separating “boy” and “girl” as Avery struggles to discover their authentic self.
