Stories Behind the Missions: Iconic Aircraft at the National Museum of the United States Air Force
Hear Don Gray, National Museum of the US Air Force docent, recount stories about some of the aircraft on display at the museum — and the missions they were involved in. Gray will discuss the B-29 Bockscar that dropped the atomic bomb on Nagasaki, the B-25 that was part of the 1942 Doolittle Raid, the infamous B-17 Memphis Bell, the supersonic spy plane SR-71 Blackbird, the Vietnam War-era AC-130 Gunship, and the experimental supersonic heavy bomber XB-70 Valkyrie.
Gray spent three years in the Air Force, where he worked with air crews across a range of aircraft on maintaining and using all forms of survival equipment in various survival situations. Gray has volunteered at the National Museum of the US Air Force for 16+ years and is active in almost every area of the museum, giving tours of all four of its galleries. He has personal experience with two of the airplanes in the museum.
