A Community Laboratory for Democratic Infrastructures

What do new energy and water infrastructures that embed the ideals of democracy and justice in them look like? How do we create engineers who can effectively incorporate social justice and ecological holism into technical decision-making? Founded on the notion of praxis, I propose a vision for the creation of a Community Laboratory for Democratic Infrastructures that aims to address these questions and establish a creative space where faculty, students, and community members can co-define and co-solve pressing challenges surrounding energy and water in impoverished communities in the US.

Darshan is a AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the US Department of Energy (DOE) in Washington, DC.  Originally from Mumbai, India, his work focuses on the intersection of climate change, renewable energy, sustainability, social justice, and engineering education. He is Technical Lead on the DOE Wave Energy Prize, a 20-month design-build-test prize competition that seeks to double the state-of-the-art performance of wave energy converters. He’s also a University of Michigan (UM) man through and through and is currently a Visiting Research Scientist in the Department of Mechanical Engineering there.  He received his PhD in aerospace engineering and sustainability ethics from UM, and his BSE in aerospace engineering from UM, too!
