Xerxes

Xerxes

Handel's only comic opera is a timeless story of love, deception, mistaken identity and ultimate forgiveness.

It combines delightfully comic situations with heart-wrenching depths of emotion that has much in common with the pairs of "star-crossed" lovers found in many Shakespearean comedies, such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

The opera is filled with some of Handel's most beautiful, charming and virtuosic music including one of Handel's greatest "musical hits" — the aria "Ombra Mai Fu," more popularly known as "Handel's Largo.”

Music by George Frideric Handel; after a libretto by Silvio Stampiglia; stage direction by Dale Dreyfoos; music direction by Brian DeMaris; musical preparation by Robert Mills, Taylor Hutchinson and Riley McKinch.
