Accessibility Through the Student Lens: Accessing Documents and Materials

Create accessible course documents that support screen readers through effective structure, headings, links and PDFs.

This 45-minute session is reserved for ASU faculty, staff, and Teaching Assistants.

This workshop will be held online. The use of automated bots, AI assistants, or other meeting recording devices are prohibited without the prior approval of event coordinators.

Course materials should support learning for every student. In this workshop, students demonstrate how they navigate syllabi, Word documents, PDFs and other instructional materials using screen readers. You'll experience how headings, tables, links and document structure can either support or hinder learning and leave with practical techniques for creating accessible documents from the start.

What you'll learn:

• Explain how students use screen readers to access course documents.
• Identify common accessibility issues in Word documents, PDFs, syllabi and other course materials.
• Understand how headings, tables, links and document structure improve navigation.
• Apply document design practices that support accessibility across learning environments.

Target Audience: ASU Educators and Designers.
