Accessibility Through the Student Lens: Experiencing Slide Content

Learn how screen readers experience slides and create presentations that are accessible, organized and inclusive.

This 45-minute session is reserved for ASU faculty, staff, and Teaching Assistants.

This workshop will be held online. The use of automated bots, AI assistants, or other meeting recording devices are prohibited without the prior approval of event coordinators.

Presentations are a staple of teaching and learning—but how do they sound to a student using a screen reader? In this workshop, students demonstrate how assistive technology interacts with PowerPoint, Google Slides and exported PDFs, highlighting how reading order, slide titles, alternative text and visual design influence accessibility. You'll discover practical techniques for creating presentation materials that communicate clearly to every learner.

What you'll learn:

• Explain how screen readers interpret presentation content.
• Identify common accessibility barriers in PowerPoint, Google Slides and exported PDFs.
• Apply best practices for slide titles, reading order and alternative text.
• Create presentation materials that support accessible, inclusive learning.
