Andrew Campbell, piano and Stephanie Weiss, mezzo-soprano: The Music of Vienna from the early 20th century
Event description
- Arts and entertainment
- Family friendly
- Open to the public
Please join pianist Andrew Campbell and friends as they explore the passionate, intense, profound, nostalgic, and at times playful music of early 20th century Vienna.
The first half will feature the iconic music of Alban Berg, one of the most celebrated of the post-romantic Austrian composers. Stephanie Weiss will join for 7 early songs by Berg that evoke the sound world of Strauss and Mahler. Following that will be a performance of Berg’s piano sonata, his first published work, which will segue into the final orchestral interlude from his seminal opera Wozzeck, performed with pianist Miki Aoki as images from the opera are projected above the stage.
The second half will feature composers who either inspired Berg or reacted against his modernist tendencies by embracing the romantic sounds of old Vienna. Stephanie Weiss will join for three songs by Gustav Mahler that demonstrate his tremendous range of musical emotions, moving from the depths of despair to spiritual healing, and ending in riotous humor. Violinist Katherine McLin and cellist Wesley Skinner will join for two famous arias arranged for piano trio from Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s masterpiece Die Tote Stadt, an operatic homage to the memory of a Vienna fading after the First World War. The recital closes with hilarious and ribald songs by Berg’s mentor Arnold Schoenberg, who wrote these for the Berlin Cabaret scene of the early 1900s, well before his revolutionary experiments in atonality.
