Event description

  • Open to the public

Join the Public History program from the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies for an exclusive screening of the newly released film, ANZA250, before the full documentary release in Oct. 2026. Following the screening will be a discussion with the lead cyclist of the expedition, Luis Valle.

This event is also presented in partnership with Mirabella at ASU, and the production of the film was made possible with support from the Humanities Institute.

About the film

In the late 1700s, Juan Bautista de Anza carved a 1,200-mile route from Mexico to what would eventually become San Francisco — laying the foundation for missions, settlements, and the multicultural fabric of the American West.

This feature length film chronicles Professor Luis Valle as he retraces Anza’s journey, traveling 1,200 miles—by bike—along the expedition's original route. Learn more about his experience along the way, bringing historical and cultural context to Anza's arrival and what it wrought, a true world-changing moment in time.

The film has a 90 minute run time. Conversation with Professor Luis Valle to follow.
