BECAUSE, SKIN

BECAUSE, SKIN is a multi-disciplinary exhibition showcasing the works of 12 ASU students and alumni creating works surrounding body horror and human mortality. Humans all navigate the earth through the same vessel: our body. It can strive as a topic of similarity as well as be that which alienates us from others. The idea of body horror operates in opposition to traditional forms of horror, in which the threat is typically external or physical, but in this sense now takes on an emotional aspect as well. In this case, the definition of the word "horror" operates as a broad concept in which the selected works anchor themselves around. Each of the artist's relationships with their idea of what bodies means to them ranges from depictions of personal identity to disability, functioning as an open dialogue for the viewer to engage with.
