Biostatistics Seminar: How to Calculate Sample Sizes and Statistical Power for Research Studies and Program Evaluations

Event description

  • Professional and career development

The Biostatistics Consultation Core presents the following applied workshop on sample size and power planning for research.

Estimating adequate sample sizes for research studies program evaluations requires inputting select metrics into power calculators. Effect size of the design variables is required, as is the correlation between repeated measurements for longitudinal studies.

This presentation will review how to estimate this correlation and relevant effect sizes from pilot data and published research. Additionally, we will discuss how to include these estimates in the calculation of sample sizes and statistical power. Finally, there will be instructions for running the sample size analysis in select software applications and interpreting the outputted sample sizes, power, and adjustments for potential participant drop-out.
