Bridal Suite (1939): A Screening & Conversation
Event description
- Arts and entertainment
- Free
Join us for an intimate screening of MGM’s Bridal Suite (1939), a rarely shown romantic comedy set between London and Switzerland and steeped in the elegance of late-1930s European style. The film is especially notable as the only motion picture to receive an on-screen credit for writer Virginia Faulkner.
Before the screening, Brad Bigelow, author of the new biography Virginia Faulkner: A Life in Two Acts, will join a ASU FIDM Museum curator Christina Frank for a conversation and book signing exploring Faulkner’s Hollywood moment, the film’s production history, and the visual language of costume and glamour in pre-war cinema.
With its refined silhouettes, romantic settings, and studio-era polish, Bridal Suite offers a stylish lens through which to consider the relationship between fashion, film, and storytelling at the close of the 1930s.
Guests will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of Virginia Faulkner: A Life in Two Acts and have it signed. Light refreshments will be provided—including wedding cake and non-alcoholic champagne—in keeping with the spirit of the film.
This event is presented by the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts in collaboration with the ASU FIDM Museum and The Sidney Poitier New American Film School.
Parking is available via 9th St. between Hope St. and Grand Ave. Underground parking open on a space-available basis for $10.
