Democracy is not just a noun. You want to be active participants in the democratic process. But how? If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to practice democracy beyond the ballot box in your neighborhoods, families and communities, this documentary film screening and workshop is for you.
Gather to watch an important documentary "9/11: Reclaiming Ground Zero" and then practice intentional democratic deliberation in a guided workshop.
The Documentary: After the terrorist attacks on September 11, New Yorkers faced a contentious question: what should they do with the space where the buildings once stood? After no one could agree during months of heated public forums, city planners took a different approach. 5,000 New Yorkers were invited to Madison Square Garden to democratically decide what to do with the space. What happened next is explored through the film "9/11: Reclaiming Ground Zero".
The Workshop: Practicing democracy is about so much more than voting. You’ll join roundtable discussions with trained facilitators. Using democratic principles, your groups will discuss issues facing Tempe, create value-based policies and decide how to best obtain public consent on policies.
