Data Science Fall 2025 Kickoff: Correlation vs Causation

Event description

  • Academic events
  • Free

Data science is an interdisciplinary field that applies the scientific method, processes, algorithms and systems to extract meaningful insights from data. In this kickoff session, the ASU Library's Unit for Data Science and Analytics team will share details about upcoming events and how you can get involved in data science and analytics. All are welcome.

During this lab, we will explore the intriguing question: Does eating more chocolate really lead to more Nobel Prizes? Understanding correlation is foundational in data science — but how do we determine if one thing actually causes another? Join us for a short, discussion-based session to examine the difference between correlation and causation, why it matters and how misleading claims often appear in media, social platforms and everyday conversation. We’ll introduce basic statistical tools to help you think critically and approach data-led claims with healthy skepticism. Whether you’re new to data science or experienced in the field, come ready to challenge assumptions and explore what the data truly reveals.
