Dig In: Humanities Lab (and Sparky!) with Sparky's Garden

Event description

  • Campus life
  • Free
  • Health and wellness
  • Inclusion
  • Sustainability

Note: This event originally planned to take place in Sparky’s Garden—will now be hosted on Durham Hall’s west terrace due to storm damage at the garden.

Join the Humanities Lab at Arizona State University—recipient of the 2024 President’s Award for Innovation—as we celebrate Humanities Week in Sparky’s Garden. Together, we’ll explore how gardens intersect with the humanities, and how these living spaces can cultivate ethical and civic engagement, enrich cultural history and inspire creative expression. We invite you to:

  • Take home a pot of fresh herbs
  • Discover Hayden Library’s Seed Library
  • Dig into the ethics and culture of food
  • Explore Humanities Lab students’ garden design work for local and community gardens—plus learn how to get involved
  • Enjoy a garden-fresh snack before your next class
  • Meet Sparky—snag a photo and a high-five!
Come hang where the humanities are in blossom and learn how growing food, ideas, and culture intertwine!

This event is part of the annual ASU Humanities Week in partnership with The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

About the Humanities Lab: The Humanities Lab hosts transdisciplinary courses that go beyond traditional academic boundaries in which students and stakeholders investigate multiple perspectives and create collaborative breakthroughs with communities on and off campus. “Labs” build bridges to new ways of knowing, doing and being by taking on pressing social challenges through a framework that always includes the humanities—ethics, culture, history, storytelling, power and diversity—to lead transformative and principled innovation. About Sparky's Garden: Nestled beside the Social Sciences Building at Arizona State University's Tempe Campus, Sparky's Garden is a vibrant, organic green space dedicated to cultivating both plants and community. Featuring 30 individual plots, this garden offers ASU students, faculty, and staff a unique opportunity to grow fresh produce and beautiful flowers in a sustainable, supportive environment.
