En Masse | MFA Thesis Exhibition

April 3 | 6–8 p.m. | Step Gallery

“En Masse” is an interactive ceramic garden consisting of several hundred hand-thrown vessels. Visitors are encouraged to harvest wares by lifting a lid, unstacking a bowl and twisting a cup out of its holding place. Pottery has a unique relationship to food in how the clay soil provides nutrients to grow the plants which, in turn, feed us. This cycle represents the deep relationship humans have to the objects we use and where they come from. Throughout the space, repeating forms are clustered to create an environment inspired by the history of gardens. This experience urges one to consider the possibility of designing residential landscapes which are both formal and edible.
