The biannual Planning Practitioner Lecture series brings together planning practitioners and students for networking and discussions on timely urban planning topics.
Join the School of Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning for the Fall 2026 Planning Practitioner Lecture, featuring City of Scottsdale planners Jeff Barnes and Jesus Murillo presenting “Environmentally Sensitive Policy: Adaptation and Collaboration in a Shifting Climate.”
Learn how Scottsdale is updating its Environmentally Sensitive Lands (ESL) Ordinance and Fire Defensible Space standards through policy development, public outreach and collaboration.
The evening will conclude with an opportunity for students to connect with planning professionals and learn more about the APA Arizona Mentorship Program. Appetizers and drink tickets will be provided.

About the speakers: Jeff Barnes, principal planner, and Jesus Murillo, senior planner, serve in the City of Scottsdale’s Planning and Development Services Department. Both are Arizona State University alumni with more than 20 years of individual experience advancing thoughtful community planning and responsible growth.
Throughout their careers, they have contributed to zoning changes, code amendments, development reviews and planning policy updates. They regularly collaborate with residents, developers, elected officials and community stakeholders to help shape Scottsdale’s built environment while preserving the environmental character and quality of life that define the city and the greater Sonoran Desert.
