Join the Lincoln Center’s Digital Humanities Initiative as we connect with an international community to celebrate Black History Month with a digital twist! For more information, please visit douglassday.org.
Every Valentine’s Day, institutions across the world hold a birthday party for Frederick Douglass. Although Douglass never knew his birthdate, he chose to celebrate every year on February 14th. Douglass Day is a day of collective action. Arizona State University will join institutions across the world as we celebrate and contribute to the preservation of Black history.
For 2024, Douglass Day participants will transcribe The Brownies’ Book, the first magazine for Black children, published in 1920 during the Harlem Renaissance and edited by W. E. B. Du Bois. This transcribe-a-thon will gather worldwide participants on the By the People crowdsourcing platform, hosted by the Library of Congress. Participants will work side-by-side on a crowdsourced transcription project.
This event will include a viewing of the Douglass Day YouTube live broadcast with speakers and readings, as well as time for transcribing and discussion.
Please drop by anytime during the event, which runs from 10am-1pm! Refreshments and snacks will be available.
