Professor Emiel DenHartog received his master’s degree in experimental physics from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and PhD in biophysics from the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in the Netherlands. After his PhD, he went to work for more than 15 years in defense research on military and first responder personal protective clothing and thermal physiology. He has worked in the Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University since 2013, and in 2021 he received his promotion to full professor. He actively collaborates with a wide range of scientists researching the physics of the interaction of humans, textiles and the environment, focusing on human health, performance and comfort. In 2019, he received the N.C. State award as University Faculty Scholar for his contributions to research and education in this field. He was the director of graduate programs for master's in textile chemistry and textile engineering from 2019 to 2023. Since fall 2023, he has served as department head of the Textile Engineering, Chemistry and Science department in the Wilson College of Textiles.
