Description
This 5-hour skills-based training equips social workers with practical strategies for integrating Motivational Interviewing (MI) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) when working with clients experiencing depression.
Participants will explore how depressive symptoms impact motivation, energy, and engagement, and how MI can be used to increase readiness before introducing CBT tools such as behavioral activation and cognitive restructuring.
This training emphasizes applied skill development through demonstration, structured practice, and case-based learning.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Describe how depressive symptoms impact motivation and engagement in treatment.
- Demonstrate MI-consistent strategies to engage clients experiencing hopelessness or resistance.
- Use reflective listening to evoke change talk in depressed clients.
- Apply the Ask–Offer–Ask framework when introducing CBT interventions.
- Integrate MI strategies to improve adherence to CBT homework and behavioral activation plans.
Target Audience
Licensed social workers, associate social workers, school social workers, and behavioral health clinicians working with adolescents or adults experiencing depression.
Continuing Education Credit
This program is designed to provide 5.0 continuing education hours through ASU School of Social Work. Approval #0130.
