Knowledge at Risk: Analyzing the Impact of Book Bans and Information Injustice in the U.S.

Interested in using data science to explore real-world social issues? Join us for the Summer 2026 In-Person Project Kickoff and learn how data science and natural language processing (NLP) can be applied to examine banned books, censorship, representation and access to information across the United States.

Participants will work with real-world datasets to identify patterns, analyze language and investigate the factors that influence book challenges and bans. No matter your academic background or experience level, this project offers an opportunity to develop practical data analysis skills while contributing to meaningful conversations about intellectual freedom and access to information.

Students will also have the opportunity to share their findings during ASU Library’s Banned Books Week programming. Come meet the project team, learn about the project goals and discover how you can get involved in this collaborative research experience that explores important questions about information access and intellectual freedom.
